Tools of the Trade

Do you know about eucalyptus oil?  Every nurse should carry this in her/his work bag.  It works to combat the worst of the worst odors...even a GI bleed (sorry - I know that I just made the nurses reading this gag).

Put a tiny drop inside a mask before you put it on to do a nasty dressing change, on a paper towel by the sink in a room that has a lingering odor, in the toilet or the bottom of a commode before a patient uses it.  Honestly, it works miracles.

Yes, everyone will ask who is using Vicks VapoRub, but it's still a MUCH better smell than most we get exposed to.

Not to be indelicate, but you can also pre-treat the toilet in the staff bathroom with a few drops if you have to, you know, go at work.  No more sneaking out of the bathroom or pretending it smelled like that before you went in!

I get eucalyptus oil from Herb & More in Lincoln, Nebraska, but you can get it from a health food store, internet source, or any place that sells essential oils. Prices vary, obviously, but this four ounces will last for a long time because you only use a drop at a time.
